Modern outdoor lighting for a better quality of life

Spanish city Terrassa relies on energy-efficient LED drivers from Tridonic

Terrassa, located near Barcelona, is committed to climate protection. Modernisation of more than 29,000 light points marks an important milestone on its journey to becoming an energy-efficient and climate-friendly city. Tridonic’s dimmable constant current LED drivers are playing a big part in this.


Back in 2013, the Terrassa city council launched the “Terrassa Energia Inteligente” (TEI) project. With climate protection as its main objective, the Catalan city is hoping to save around 17,000 MWh of energy per year. It wants to achieve this by improving energy efficiency and reducing pollutant emissions. To make this ambitious goal a reality the administration is relying on modern technologies. These include renewable energy sources, a fleet of hybrid buses for public transport and modernisation of municipal lighting.
 

Uniform lighting control

At the beginning of 2019, the Terrassa city administration and its project partner imesAPI SA began upgrading all the luminaires in the city. 29,000 light points were replaced with LED luminaires from various manufacturers. This diverse setup is a challenge for lighting control in particular. To control all the outdoor lighting despite this diversity, the city administration chose dimmable constant current LED drivers for luminaire installation from Tridonic. Apart from a long life of 100,000 hours and a wide dimming range of 1 to 100 percent, the drivers offered impressive energy savings of up to 94 percent.

The LED drivers in use today in Terrassa are mainly the constant current LED drivers from Tridonic’s advanced (ADV) family. At bus stops and train stations, devices from the excite family of drivers are used. The corridorFUNCTION in combination with motion detectors always provides the right lighting and therefore ensures the safety of pedestrians in Terrassa. High luminous fluxes are only produced when they are actually needed. All in all, Terrassa was able to lower the outdoor lighting’s energy consumption by 80 percent.
